In this study, we focused on the use of RS convolutional codes in Gaussian channels. To evaluate the performance of the decoding process, we used both soft and hard decision decoding methods and simulated the bit error rate. To do this, we first built a module using Simulink and then used an m-file to call and produce the final results. Our simulation involved several steps, such as generating random data, encoding using RS convolutional codes, and then transmitting the encoded data through the Gaussian channel. Once the noisy data was received, we applied the two aforementioned decoding methods to recover the original data. Finally, we evaluated the bit error rate for each case and compared the performance of the two decoding methods. Through our simulation, we were able to show that the use of soft decision decoding can significantly improve the performance of the system under high levels of noise.
